OHRID WALKING TOUR – Half day

09:00 Tour starts from meeting point at the main Ohrid sqaure, near the statu of St.Clement.
The Church of Mother of God Peribleptos (С. Богородица ), the Roman theater from 1st century AD – recently renovated, The Cathedral church of St. Sophia (Св. Софија) the oldest Ohrid church, the former seat of the Ohrid Archbishop, amazing church of St. John – Kaneo (Св. Јован – Канео) – standing alone on a small promontory, according to many, the most picturesque church in Ohrid.
St. Clement of Ohrid, in the 9th century, founded the first Slavic University in Europe and educated more than 3,500 students. In this holy area, called Plaoshnik (Плаошник) today, you can see remains of an Early Christian basilica together with rebuilt St. Clement’s church. It is right above the Ohrid old city, next to the Ohrid fortress of Tzar Samoil and provides spectacular panoramic views of the Lake and surrounding mountains.

The city of Ohrid is located on the shore of Lake Ohrid, 695 m height above sea level, at the very south part of Macedonia. From prehistoric and classical times (when Ohrid was known as Lychnidos, the “City of light”) the Lake Ohrid region has been an important center of culture and learning. Its Slavic name, Arida, was mentioned later with the arrival of the Slavs.
At 10th century town becomes major center of southern Slav learning and since then countless icons frescos and mosaics have been created. This monument town is a cradle of the Slavic written language and literature in the 9th century, spread over the rest Slavic peoples first by the brothers Ciril and Methody, and later by their pupils. There is no part of Old Ohrid, known as a tourist center today, without its history, neither on nor under the ground. Over the centuries an enormous and colorful heritage of beautiful architecture, crafts and traditions has evolved. Combined with its scenic lake and mountain scape, interesting town and village architecture, local hospitality, climate and delicious fresh food, a visit to the Ohrid area will deeply rewarding.
