SKOPJE AND OHRID IN TWO DAYS – Full day
08:30 Tour starts from the meeting point near the Church of St Spas, near the Old bazaar in Skopje. Also called “old part of Skopje” is located on the left bank of the river Vardar. Large number of monuments from the Ottoman era, combined with typical architecture from the beginning of 20th century, makes this area “a place you must visit”.
Church of St. Spas (The Holly Salvation), located on the top of, so called “Old city”, the most famous church in Skopje with its marvelous wooden iconostasis. Before the famous Stone Bridge who connects left and right part of Skopje, or old and modern part of the city, you will pass the recently built square with magnificent statue of Philip II. Crossing the Stone Bridge and arrival to the main city square, simply called square Macedonia.
Later on, passing by the monument of Mother Teresa, you will be invited to visit her Memorial house (included), located on the main pedestrian street in Skopje. A walking part of this tour will end next to the building of the Old railway station, damaged during the Skopje earthquake in 1963, where today the City museum is housed.
12:00 Afternoon drive on mountain road via Mavrovo NP and lakes made by river Crn Drim (due to weather conditions in winter, the road via Mavrovo NP could be closed for traffic, so tour will be operated via the main road and town of Kicevo) Upon arrival in the city of Ohrid accommodation at the hotel and overnight in Ohrid.
Because of the religious importance and its numerous churches and monasteries, Ohrid is also famous under the name “Macedonian Jerusalem”. According the history facts, there used to be 365 churches – a church for each day! In 12th century, the city was also the seat of Archbishop of Ohrid. Since 1979 the city and the lake of Ohrid are under protection of UNESCO.
09:00 A walking city tour starts with visit to the Church of Mother of God – Peribleptos, one of the most important Ohrid churches. Right across this church is the Icon gallery with its collection of more than 30 icons estimated as masterworks created in a period from 11th to 19th century.
Tour continues to the Tzar Samuil fortress, located the top of the hill, with a spectacular view over the city. Nearby is the Holly area of Plaosnik, the foundation of the Early Christian basilica and the recently rebuilt Church of St.Klement – the city patron, on the foundations of the original church from 9th century.
The foundations of the first Slavic university on the Balkans are here as well.
Bellow, in the locality called Kaneo, on the rock climbing over the lake is founded the Church of St.John of Devine. – a small church with three sided apse and octagonal dome, a typical peace of traditional architecture.
Do not miss the opportunity to see old Ohrid from the lake side, taking a short boat ride from Kaneo area to the city center (optional). The Ohrid walking tour finishes with visit to the Cathedral church St Sofia. This is the biggest and oldest church in Ohrid, with surprisingly well preserved fresco paintings from 10th century. 12:00 Time at leisure in Ohrid bazaar and Main Square or optional lunch in some restaurant by the lake.
13:30 Afternoon drive along the Ohrid lake coast line to the south part of the lake and Monastery of St. Naum. As a final surprise in this tour – a spectacular 40 min boat cruise above the springs of river Crn Drim. There are large amount of underwater and side springs who makes a beautiful lake. The water coming from these springs is actually the spring of river Black Drim who flows into Ohrid Lake.
17:00 Drive back to Skopje and arrival in Skopje in the evening.
