WEEKEND IN MACEDONIA

TOUR ITINERARY

09:00 Tour starts from meeting point near the Church of St Spas, which is the entrance to the Old Skopje bazaar.Also called “old part of Skopje” is located on the left bank of the river Vardar. Large number of monuments from the Ottoman era, combined with typical architecture from the beginning of 20th century, makes this area “a place you must visit”.

Church of St. Spas (The Holly Salvation), located on the top of, so called “Old city”, the most famous church in Skopje with its marvelous wooden iconostasis. Crossing the Stone Bridge and arrival to the main city square, simply called square Macedonia. Passing by the monument of Mother Teresa, you will be invited to visit her Memorial house (included), located on the main pedestrian street in Skopje.

12:00 Afternoon drive on Vodno mountain near Skopje to visit the Monastery of St Panteleimon. Optional – cable car ride to the top of the mountain and Millenium Cross.

17:00 Arrival to your hotel. Evening at leisure. O/N in Skopje.

FRIDAY – WEST MACEDONIA

09:00 Morning visit to Matka lake and gorge near Skopje. Optional boat ride and visit to the entrance of one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe.

11:30 Drive on road via Mavrovo NP and lakes made by river Crn Drim.

14:00 Visit to the Bigorski monastery on the way.

17:00 Upon arrival in the city of Ohrid accommodation at the hotel and overnight in Ohrid.

SATURDAY – OHRID AND OHRID LAKE

Because of the religious importance and its numerous churches and monasteries, Ohrid is also famous under the name “Macedonian Jerusalem”.

09:00 A walking city tour starts with visit to the Church of Mother of God – Peribleptos, one of the most important Ohrid churches. Tour continues to the Tzar Samuil fortress, located the top of the hill, with a spectacular view over the city. Nearby is the Holly area of Plaosnik, the foundation of the Early Christian basilica and the recently rebuilt Church of St.Klement – the city patron, on the foundations of the original church from 9th century. Do not miss the opportunity to see old Ohrid from the lake side, taking a short boat ride from Kaneo area to the city center (optional). The Ohrid walking tour finishes with visit to the Cathedral church St Sofia.

12:00 Time at leisure in Ohrid bazaar and Main Square or optional lunch in some restaurant by the lake

13:30 Afternoon drive along the Ohrid lake coast line to the south part of the lake and Monastery of St. Naum. As a final surprise in this tour – a spectacular 40 min boat cruise above the springs of river Crn Drim.

17:00 Drive back to Ohrid and your hotel. Evening at leisure in Ohrid.

SUNDAY – BITOLA AND TIKVESH WINE REGION

08:30 Departure to Bitola and visit to Heraclea Lynkestis – ancient site founded by Philipp II of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the Great.

11:30 Leaving this beautiful city, after 2 hours’ drive, arrival in the most famous wine region Tikvesh.

12:00 Time at leisure in Ohrid bazaar and Main Square or optional lunch in some restaurant by the lake

13:30 It will be a pleasure for us to invite you to a farewell lunch and unforgettable wine tasting in one of the oldest wine cellars in the region (included in the price).

15:30 Transfer to your hotel in Skopje (hotel accommodation for this night is not included in the tour price). End of the tour.
